Plymouth Moves Local Elections to June to Align With State Aid Data

Key Points

  • Spring Town Meeting moved to the third Saturday in May
  • Annual Town Election moved to the second Saturday in June
  • Change intended to provide more accurate state aid data for budget planning

In a significant shift for local governance, Town Meeting members approved a series of charter and bylaw amendments to move the annual town election to June and the Spring Town Meeting to May. Proponents argued that the current schedule forces the town to make critical budget decisions before final state aid numbers are released.

Select Board member Kevin Canty supported the change, stating that state aid is much clearer in May than it is in January... a no vote continues to have you reaching around in the dark on important numbers. However, some members expressed concern about democratic participation. Lawrence Piser opposed the move, arguing that moving the town election into June past high school graduation is going to lower an already unacceptable number and percentage for the town election.

Despite concerns over potential voter turnout, the measures achieved the required two-thirds majority to move forward.
