Town Meeting Rescues July 4th Funding with $50,000 for Public Safety Costs

Key Points

  • $50,000 allocated from free cash for July 4th public safety costs.
  • Private donations reached a record low with only 52 individual donors last year.
  • Funding is critical for the upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations.

Concerns over the sustainability of Plymouth's Independence Day celebrations led Town Meeting to approve Special Town Meeting Article 3, granting $50,000 from free cash to July 4th Plymouth, Inc. The funds are designated to cover municipal public safety costs, including police, fire, and Department of Public Works support.

Matthew Tavares warned the body that the current private donation model is failing. Last year we had 52 individuals out of a community of 62,000 people donate... It's not a sustainable model, Tavares said, noting that the committee’s reserves are nearly exhausted. The town support is intended to ensure the 250th-anniversary commemoration of the Declaration of Independence can proceed despite the slump in private contributions.

Motion: To appropriate $50,000 from free cash.
