Voters Approve Airport Sewer and Police Parking While Rejecting Park Lighting

Key Points

  • $700,000 approved for State Police hangar at the airport
  • Airport gravity sewer line approved despite neighbor concerns
  • Training Green lighting rejected as historically inappropriate
  • Downtown Resiliency design funding failed due to lack of public input

Under Article 18, Town Meeting members navigated a diverse list of capital improvement projects, approving several infrastructure upgrades while rejecting others on historical and procedural grounds. Notable approvals included $162,900 for a police parking lot and $700,000 for a state police hangar at the airport, which will be funded by debt covered by rent payments.

A proposal for a $140,000 airport gravity sewer line passed 90-58 despite concerns from neighbors regarding transparency and potential industrial expansion. However, voters rejected $115,250 for Downtown Resiliency Phase 2 design, with some members arguing that the first phase should be completed before moving forward. Additionally, a $123,000 request for lighting at the Training Green failed after speakers argued it was historically inappropriate for an Olmsted-designed park. A separate $97,000 request for irrigation at the same park was approved to protect new turf.
